DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WKRC) - A 5-year-old South Carolina boy died after being attacked by a dog while at his caregiver's home, authorities said.
The Dorchester County Coroner's Office identified the child as JayCeon Gates of Ladson, per The Post and Courier.
According to officials, Gates was attacked by a pit bull terrier Saturday morning at a home in Dorchester County.
Deputies responded around 7:30 a.m. and found the child and an adult suffering injuries consistent with a dog attack.
Gates was taken to Trident Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The adult was also hospitalized. Authorities have not released the person's identity or condition.
The Dorchester County Sheriff's Office, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Department of Child Fatalities are investigating the incident.
An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.
