An Arkansas couple has sacrificed their wedding fund to save the life of a severely injured dog they found abandoned on the side of a road.
On September 18, Dylan McCay and his fiancée, Emily Roberts, came across a Facebook post about a dog in desperate need of help. When McCay drove to the location, he discovered the Goldendoodle, later named Acklin, lying in the rain after being struck in a hit-and-run accident.
Found Shivering and Bleeding
Acklin was found shivering, soaked, and covered in blood. Her back legs appeared broken, and she struggled to breathe. McCay wrapped her in towels and blankets before rushing her to Greenbrier Animal Hospital for emergency care.Veterinarians confirmed Acklin had fractured both femurs and faced potential infection due to prolonged exposure in the rain. With no microchip or owner identified, McCay and Roberts realized that they alone would need to cover her care.
A Life-Saving Sacrifice
The couple soon faced medical costs estimated between $10,000 and $15,000 for Acklin’s reconstructive surgery. Choosing compassion over personal plans, McCay and Roberts decided to use their wedding savings and life savings to pay for the procedures.“We have pulled the money from our wedding fund and our overall life savings to fund these medical expenses,” they shared in a Facebook update. “We are excited to help this wonderful girl and give her the best possible life.”
Community Support
Alongside funding Acklin’s surgery, the couple set up a GoFundMe campaign to help with her long-term rehabilitation and therapy.
On September 2222, they announced that Acklin’s surgery had been successful. The next challenge is costly rehabilitation, but they remain committed.
“Her rehabilitation and therapy will be expensive, but we are doing everything we can for our sweet girl,” McCay and Roberts wrote. “Thanks to all of you, she is receiving the help she so greatly deserves.”
