Tropical Storm Humberto Strengthens Into Hurricane in the Atlantic

NEW YORK (WABC) – The Atlantic hurricane season is heating up with the formation of Hurricane Humberto and the potential arrival of another storm, Imelda, within days.

Hurricane Humberto Update

Humberto is currently located about 465 miles (750 kilometers) northeast of the northern Leeward Islands, moving slowly toward the northwest. Classified as a Category 1 hurricane, it is packing sustained winds of 75 mph.

Forecasters expect Humberto to intensify quickly, possibly reaching major hurricane status this weekend, with the potential to become a Category 4 storm. The system is projected to pass west of Bermuda on Tuesday and Wednesday, staying several hundred miles away from the U.S. East Coast before turning back out to sea.

Tropical System Could Become Imelda

Meanwhile, a developing tropical wave in the Atlantic could soon be named Imelda. Meteorologists say the system may strengthen into a tropical depression on Friday, a tropical storm on Saturday, and possibly a hurricane by early next week.

The storm is expected to move through the Bahamas this weekend, impacting the eastern islands on Sunday before turning northward. While the track remains uncertain, forecasters caution that parts of the Southeast U.S. coast could feel its effects.

What It Means

If both Humberto and Imelda become hurricanes at the same time within a few hundred miles of each other, it would mark a rare occurrence in the Atlantic Basin. Residents along the U.S. East Coast and the Bahamas are urged to stay alert and follow National Hurricane Center updates as the situation develops.
