A Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department K-9 was seriously injured Friday after being stabbed several times by a knife-wielding suspect during a tense standoff with officers.
According to police, the incident began when officers responded to reports of a barricaded individual inside an apartment, along with concerns that a fire had been set inside the unit. Negotiators attempted to make contact, but the suspect refused to cooperate.
When officers deployed K-9 Enzo to assist in entering the residence, the dog was attacked and stabbed multiple times. Enzo was immediately airlifted to a veterinary hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. His condition has not yet been publicly released.
The suspect, armed with a knife, eventually exited the apartment and was taken into custody by SWAT officers. Authorities confirmed that part of the apartment had been set on fire before the arrest, further escalating the danger of the situation.
The police department emphasized that the use of K-9s in high-risk operations is a standard practice intended to protect human officers from life-threatening encounters.
An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
